Long-term planning and time horizons

When we plan our goals, we involve different time horizons. Writing a shopping list usually means thinking ahead two days, while the development of a new product should involve the next two years. And sometimes we look further into the future. Those who decide to have children may want to involve the next two decades in the planning.

While working on tasks with a short-term time horizon, we should always try to keep the direction we have projected for our long-term goals.

Our brain is not well equipped for the simultaneous overview of different time horizons in our various roles of life. But it can be revealing and awareness-raising to gain this overview.

Time horizons are not a method for decision-making, but a way to sharpen one's awareness of developments and the use of time.

How does it work?

meineZIELE supports long-term planning with the "horizons view". Several time horizons (day, week, month, year and more) are available. The more entries of a sphere of influence are attributable to a time horizon, the darker the red bullet point appears. If you click a bullet point, meineZIELE will take you to the respective entries.

Note: The more important part of planning is not the contemplation of what is already in your list and falls into the respective horizons. Rather, it is important to actively think about what will be important in which role to which time. You can allocate any of your entries with a time horizon by dragging the corresponding icon on it.

This type of planning you can also perform well on a large sheet of paper without software. The horizon planning poster, available in our shop, suits well for this purpose.
