The example
A spectacular success story of a strategic decision can be found in several textbooks: The American airline Southwest Airlines became the most profitable airline in the world by using clever strategy.
It is an example of positioning strategy: Southwest chose to completely ignore several competitive factors. Southwests management decided, for example, not to fly to the major air traffic hubs at all. On the other hand, the decision was made to focus on squeezing travel times and on supplying medium-sized cities.
This resulted in a unique force deployment profile, sometimes called a strategic contour. This led to a market position with no direct competitors and, as a result, record profits for several years.
This example shows what that looks like.
