The Southwest Airlines profile

The example

A spectacular success story of a strategic decision can be found in several textbooks: The American airline Southwest Airlines became the most profitable airline in the world by using clever strategy.

It is an example of positioning strategy: Southwest chose to completely ignore several competitive factors. Southwests management decided, for example, not to fly to the major air traffic hubs at all. On the other hand, the decision was made to focus on squeezing travel times and on supplying medium-sized cities.

This resulted in a unique force deployment profile, sometimes called a strategic contour. This led to a market position with no direct competitors and, as a result, record profits for several years.

This example shows what that looks like.

What is there to learn?

Technically, profiles are a very simple thing. But you could use the example to try out the different design options like

  • lines
  • colors
  • stretching a curve

Parameters

Setting colors 1 and line widths 2 is more or less self-explanatory. With 3, on the other hand, you will find a special feature: Such profiles are often created through group discussions or through the meineZIELE voting system. Then sometimes you realize that an entire curve actually needs to be compressed or stretched. You can do that with the slider.
